In 1997 October we surveyed the slum called Adarshanagore in Mankundu and next year Mr. Tapas Kumar Sur started adult literacy class with a handful of women but the class didn’t last as the women exhausted with their day’s work wanted to relax a little in the evening. So he (Mr. Sur) decided to work for the children. He started with Brotochary (Folk dance imparting values with rhymes, sports & games) for children.
The community came up to help, together with community we set up the priority of the community. The community suggested child education & cultural activities, health needs and community infrastructure. Thus the integrated community development work was started. They started to build a tutorial hall with bamboos, contributed their labour. The 1st. small bamboo room was built and tutorial was started. Gradually room was enlarged and developed bit by bit, years by years. All the students of the community joined the tutorial, they were provided with study materials. The students’ sponsorship programme, dance class, health check up, micro savings and credits with women were gradually introduced.
After 5 years we started second project in Surerbagan- Khasbagan in Mankundu. A branch of Human Wave started working in South 24 Paraganas around Baruipur and Raidighi.
